Highlight Hypocrisy of Rep. Kingston on Economic Recovery Act

One year after Recovery Act was signed, Kingston tries to claim credit for its successes even though he voted against it

Savannah GA – Marking the one-year anniversary of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Democratic Party of Georgia calls attention to the hypocrisy of Rep. Jack Kingston who voted against the act, but has taken credit for the investments it has created in Georgia.

Kingston sent out official press releases from his office claiming credit for federal funds delivered to Georgia’s 1st congressional district, without mentioning the funds came from the Recovery Act that he voted against.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act allocates federal money for numerous projects that benefit Georgia’s 1st congressional district, including:

  • Improvements to the McRae-Telfair-Wheeler County Airport, Adel-Cook County airport, Alma-Bacon County airport, and others.
  • Payment of operating expenses to keep the Diversity Health Center in Hinesville in operation.
  • Purchase of the Livescan system for the Hinesville Police Department to better process and investigate lawbreakers.
  • Seven police officers for the Valdosta Police Department.
  • Implementation of a commercial truck driver training program at Okefenokee Technical College to train citizens for new job opportunities.

Even now, Kingston praises a $108,652 grant to the Blackshear Housing Authority and a $2.7 grant million for low-income families in Savannah, yet he voted against these funds in the Recovery Act.

“Many of the people benefitting from these projects are unaware that their Congressman tried to prevent them from happening,” said Jane Kidd, Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Representative Kingston has been hostile to these projects, yet publicly takes credit for them. It’s Washington hypocrisy at its worst.”
